Symphytum officinale is a perennial flowering plant in the family Boraginaceae. Along with thirty four other species of Symphytum, it is known as comfrey.
Comfrey roots and leaves contain allantoin, a substance that helps new skin cells grow, along with other substances that reduce inflammation and keep skin healthy. Comfrey ointments have been used to heal bruises as well as pulled muscles and ligaments, fractures, sprains, strains, and osteoarthritis.
Comfrey also contains carbohydrates (including mucilage), tannins, triterpenes, allantoin and alkaloids. Allantoin stimulates the regeneration of connective tissue, bone and cartilage .
Other Benefits of Comfrey
1. Wound Healing Properties
Comfrey root contains allantoin, a compound known for its ability to promote cell growth and tissue regeneration. Research has indicated that topical applications of comfrey may enhance the healing process of skin wounds by encouraging new skin cell formation. A 2024 review highlighted that comfrey extracts could have antioxidant effects that contribute positively to wound healing.
2. Anti-Inflammatory Effects
The anti-inflammatory properties of comfrey root can be beneficial in treating conditions associated with inflammation, such as sprains and strains. The compounds found in comfrey may help reduce swelling and alleviate pain associated with joint disorders, making it a popular choice in traditional medicine for managing symptoms related to osteoarthritis.
3. Pain Relief for Joint Disorders
Comfrey root has been traditionally used to relieve pain from various joint disorders, including osteoarthritis. Studies suggest that topical preparations containing comfrey may help alleviate symptoms such as morning stiffness and pain, although some research indicates mixed results regarding its effectiveness in reducing inflammation or cartilage breakdown.
4. Skin Health Improvement
In addition to wound healing, comfrey root is often used in topical formulations aimed at improving overall skin health. Its bioactive compounds can help maintain skin integrity and promote healing from minor injuries like bruises or pulled muscles.
