Osha Root
size 1oz
(Latin Name: Ligusticum porteri)
(Also known as: Bear Root, Spirit Root, Mountain Medicine)
Brief History & Origin
Osha Root is the Sacred Root of Protection, Breath, and Ancestral Connection, native to the high mountains of the Southwestern United States and Mexico. Indigenous peoples—such as the Apache, Navajo, and Pueblo—have used Osha Root for centuries as a lung healer, ceremonial protector, and spiritual offering. It is often called “Bear Root,” because bears are known to seek it out, chew on it, and rub it into their fur when sick or wounded—teaching us that Osha is medicine for both the body and spirit.
Osha is revered as a guardian herb, burned as incense, carried as a talisman, and brewed into teas for protection, purification, and resilience. It is especially known for opening the lungs, strengthening breath, and clearing congestion—both physical and emotional.
